Pavement on Ground That Barely Slopes
Paving contractors in Corpus Christi work on some of the flattest, lowest ground of any Texas city. The city's official elevation is about 6.6 feet, it wraps around Nueces Bay and Corpus Christi Bay, and the 1991 to 2020 normals put average rainfall at 31.74 inches a year. That rain tends to come in bursts: the wettest day on record dropped 9.86 inches on July 2, 2007, and September 1967 brought 20.33 inches in a single month. Asphalt fails here when water has nowhere to go, so the first thing we design on any driveway or lot is the slope.
Getting water off the pavement
On level coastal lots, a quarter inch of fall here or there decides whether a puddle drains in an hour or sits for two days. Standing water softens the base, works into joints, and leaves the dark rings and soft spots that turn into potholes. We shoot grades at the estimate, mark where water pools now, and set the new surface so it runs toward the street, a swale or a drain rather than toward the garage or the building. When a lot cannot be sloped enough on its own, we talk through options such as raising the base, adding a valley gutter line, or tying into an existing inlet.
What sits under the asphalt
Wikipedia's summary of the local geology describes the ground under Corpus Christi as river-laid sand, silt, clay and gravel of the Deweyville Formation, locally cemented with caliche. In practice, that means the subgrade changes from one property to the next. Some lots dig firm and dry, while others turn soft and sticky after a week of rain. We probe and dig where the old pavement has failed, replace soft material with compacted crushed stone, and build the base to the depth written in your quote. Cost guides describe a typical residential driveway as 2 to 3 inches of compacted asphalt over 6 to 8 inches of compacted gravel, with more of each where trucks and trailers park.
Sun, heat and storms
Corpus Christi's record high is 109 degrees, set on September 5, 2000, and long stretches of strong sun are normal from late spring into fall. Ultraviolet light oxidizes the binder in asphalt, turning a black surface gray and brittle until it starts to ravel. Sealcoating every few years slows that down. The city's storm history (the 1919 storm, Celia in 1970, Allen in 1980, Harvey in 2017 and Hanna in 2020) is also a reminder that pavement edges and drainage paths take a beating in heavy weather. After a big storm we look for undermined edges, washouts and new low spots before recommending anything.
The driveway approach and the city right-of-way
The strip between the street and your property line belongs to the city. Corpus Christi's Right-of-Way Management team issues a Driveway/Sidewalk/Curb & Gutter permit for building a new driveway approach, removing and replacing an existing approach, sidewalk or curb and gutter, or extending an approach in the city right-of-way. The October 2023 application lists a $95 application fee ($145 expedited), asks for 72 hours' notice before construction and an inspection booked 48 hours ahead, and requires a certificate of insurance and a traffic control plan. Work on state highways goes through TxDOT's Corpus Christi Area Office instead. If your project stops at your property line, none of this may apply. If it reaches the street, we tell you at the estimate and build the permit timeline into the schedule.
What a typical job includes
- Measuring the area and shooting grades for drainage
- Removing old asphalt, concrete or shell and hauling it away
- Digging out soft subgrade and replacing it with compacted stone
- Grading and compacting the base to the depth in your quote
- Placing and rolling hot-mix asphalt to the written thickness
- Finishing edges and transitions at the garage, sidewalk and approach
- Care instructions, including when to drive on it and when it can be sealed
Homes and businesses
We pave residential driveways, gravel-to-asphalt conversions and private drives, as well as parking lots for shops, offices, churches, clinics and warehouses. Commercial lots get a phasing plan so customers can still get in, and restriping is laid out against the 2010 ADA Standards for accessible spaces. The city has grown from 108,287 people in 1950 to 317,863 at the 2020 census, so there are driveways and lots of every age here, and the right answer for a 1960s driveway on the Southside is rarely the same as for one poured ten years ago.
Where We Work
Corpus Christi is home base, including Flour Bluff and Calallen, and we work across the Coastal Bend: Portland, Gregory, Ingleside, Ingleside on the Bay, Aransas Pass, Port Aransas, Rockport and Fulton toward the bays and islands; Robstown, Banquete, Agua Dulce, Driscoll and Bishop to the west and south; Kingsville, Alice and Orange Grove farther inland; and Sinton, Taft, Odem and Mathis across the Nueces River. Low barrier-island ground and inland towns at 150 to 200 feet in elevation call for different drainage plans, and each city or county sets its own rules for work that touches the street. The town pages cover what we know about each one.

Common Questions
What do paving contractors in Corpus Christi charge for an asphalt driveway?
National cost guides put new asphalt driveways at about $5 to $12 or more per square foot (HomeGuide) and $7 to $15 per square foot (Angi). HomeGuide's table puts a 400-square-foot driveway at $2,000 to $4,800 and notes that some contractors set a minimum around $2,000. Tear-out, soft-base repair and drainage work change the total, and your written estimate is the price.
Do I need a permit to replace my driveway in Corpus Christi?
Work on your own lot may not, but work on the approach, sidewalk or curb in the city right-of-way does. The City's Right-of-Way Management team issues that permit; the October 2023 application lists a $95 fee, 72 hours' notice before work and a scheduled inspection. We confirm the current requirements before any approach work is planned.
Why does water stand on my driveway after it rains?
On flat ground, small dips that a few years of settling create are enough to hold water. Low spots can sometimes be corrected with a leveling course and overlay; if the base underneath has gone soft, that section needs to be dug out and rebuilt. We check with a level and a probe before recommending either.
How often should asphalt be sealcoated on the coast?
HomeGuide gives a range of every 2 to 10 years depending on the sealer and climate, and HomeAdvisor suggests every 2 to 5 years for parking lots. Strong sun dries out asphalt quickly here, so most driveways benefit from the shorter end of that range. New asphalt should cure for about 3 to 6 months before its first coat.
Is asphalt or concrete better for a Corpus Christi driveway?
Both work. Asphalt usually costs less up front, is quick to repair and can be overlaid later, but it needs periodic sealing in strong sun. Concrete costs more and needs less routine upkeep. The city's approach in the right-of-way follows its own design standards regardless of what you choose for the driveway itself.
Can you pave over my old driveway?
If the base is sound and the damage is mostly on the surface, an overlay of about 1.5 to 2 inches is often a good option; HomeGuide prices overlays at $1 to $3 per square foot. If cracks cover most of the surface, or there are soft, sunken areas, the old cracks will come back through, and replacement is the better value.
How long after paving can I drive on it?
Usually a few days for cars, longer in hot weather when the surface stays soft. Keep trailers, RVs and heavy trucks off it longer, and avoid turning the steering wheel while parked for the first season. We give you specific timing for your job.
